Should have known that watching Pakistan v Australia play a Test Match at Lords might indicate a seminal shift away from convention. So no surprise that having designated today as an ECB Premier League day (, I received a call from someone early doors telling me that Ben Ainslie was backing out of the 2010 Audi MedCup circuit and switching his focus to 2012 Finn training and the World Match Racing Tour. Whaaaaaat??? Why on earth would he stand down from the TP52 circuit just as things at Team Origin were getting interesting? After Mike Sanderson's departure, Grant Simmer's appointment and Juan Kouyoumdjian's sacking, things are definitely quite interesting. Thats official! But the first 'focus' bit sounded plausible - Ben has confirmed he is doing Skandia Sail for Gold in August but has loads of training and preparation to do to guarantee success against some of his rampaging rivals... especially his Skandia Team GBR teammates. If he didn't feel confident of that success, he would not commit to the Weymouth regatta but as ever with Ben, he has made his decision and will make sure he is on the pace...and the podium. But WMRT over Audi MedCup??? Hmmm. Don't think so...if that was the case, he would have made that priority clear at the start of the year. Next stop Ainslie. Is it right you are scaling back the TP52 stuff. Whaaaaaat? He said. Er no though we won't be doing the TP52 World Championships in October - never were - which means I can do Bermuda and the new Qingdao events on the WMRT circuit. And that dear friends means that Ainslie's Team Origin will most likely win the 2010 title especially since Adam Minoprio has now shifted his focus out of the WMRT (to the dismay of his crew). Hey ho. Alarm over. Wonder if I should check out the final three WMRT events in 2010. Bermuda, Qingdao and Malaysia? Anyway, there were neither Premier League cricket nor TO updates though I did book my Cowes accommodation finally, completed my 2 years to go sailiing item for TMG, updated my Simmer interview feature and did some groundwork on a fab new project which is right up my street.
